School councillors attend Holocaust Memorial ceremony.

4 February 2016 (by adminuser)

KS2 school councillors represented SS Peter and Paul's at the event in Valentines Park last Wednesday along with pupils from around the borough, the Mayor of Redbridge and other local dignitaries.

During the ceremony, entitled 'Don't Stand By' pupils heard an inspirational speech by holocaust survivor Ruth Barnett who was rescued from the Nazis, aged four, on the Kindertransport – German for children’s transport – rescue effort. They also learnt about the efforts of Sir Nicholas Winton, who did not 'stand by' and worked hard to help some 669 children escape from Czechoslovakia. Mayor Cllr Barbara White spoke directly to all the children urging them not to stand by, but stand up for what is right. Prior to the event, the school council members had designed a leaf depicting the school name which they hung above on a special commemorative tree in the park during the ceremony.
